In this clip, Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan exposes the reality of Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani and clarifies that he was upon irja, and that irja spread widely because of him.
⚠️ This fatwa was issued at Dhul-Qa’dah of 1443 (specificly: 26 June, 2022). Official: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80eCsd06tNw
⚠️ The quotations presented below are taken directly from al-Albani himself and clearly oppose the principles and consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah in matters of iman and kufr.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔴 First: Negating takfir of one who falls into clear outward major shirk
He said (5/542):
“There is no doubt that this is a type of shirk. However, takfir itself is not applied except after establishing the hujjah.
For example, if you see an imam who does not believe in Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah, so he worships others besides Allah, calls upon other than Allah in times of hardship, and vows and sacrifices to other than Allah in times of ease, this is kufr without any doubt. Yet we cannot say that he is a kafir except after explaining it to him.
These and those must not be rushed into takfir and removal from the fold of their religion until the hujjah is established against them. If they then reject it (juhood), the saying of our Lord applies:
‘They rejected them while their souls were convinced of them’ (al-Naml 27:14).
At that point, we remove them from the fold of Islam without concern.” End quote.
🔎 Why this is irja:
Because kufr is affirmed in the action, yet the ruling of outward kufr is withheld, al-Albani affirms Islam and Tawhid for those who openly and publicly commit clear, witnessed major shirk, unless inner denial is established after the hujjah. This directly opposes the consensus of the Salaf.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔴 Second: Restricting kufr to denial and rejection only
He said in al-Sahihah (4/49):
“This is only due to their ignorance of the reality of kufr by which a person exits iman, namely denial and rejection of what has reached him of proof and knowledge.” End quote.
🔎 Why this is irja:
Because he restricts and conditions outward kufr upon inner denial and rejection alone, he strips clear and manifest outward statements and actions of kufr of their ruling.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔴 Third: Negating takfir of one who insults Allah or the Messenger unless inner intent is established
In Mawsuat Aqwal al-Albani fi al-Aqidah (4/285):
Question: “Some reports are narrated from certain imams and some Companions, such as Khalid ibn al-Walid, and from some imams such as Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, declaring the one who insults Allah or the Messenger to be a disbeliever and considering it kufr of apostasy. Is this unrestricted?”
He answered: “We do not hold this as unrestricted at all. Insulting and cursing may result from ignorance or poor upbringing, and it may occur from heedlessness. Finally, it may occur intentionally and knowingly. If it is done intentionally and knowingly, then it is apostasy with no dispute.” End quote.
🔎 Why this is irja:
Because he conditions takfir in the clearest forms of verbal kufr upon hidden intentions, whereas the Salaf ruled kufr based on the statement itself outwardly.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
⚠️ Fourth: Conditioning takfir for insulting the Mushaf upon intent
He said (5/628):
“If we see a Muslim, and we see him step on the Mushaf, there is no doubt that this is an evil act. However, it is not permissible to issue a ruling of takfir until we verify that he did this intending to insult the Mushaf and that he knew the book he stepped on was the Noble Quran. If he knew it was the Quran and intended to insult it, then this is kufr of apostasy. But if it is possible that he did not know it was the Book of Allah, or that he did it during a state of intense anger, then he is not judged; rather, he is disciplined.” End quote.
🔎 Why this is irja:
Because it suspends the ruling of kufr from a manifest kufr act and ties it exclusively to inner intent.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✅ Ahl al-Sunnah clearly distinguish between outward and inward rulings.
Outwardly, a person is judged by his statements and actions. If he commits shirk or kufr openly, he is ruled outwardly according to that clear evidence, while his final affair is left to Allah.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728H) said in As-Sarim al-Maslul (2/339):
فمن قال أو فعل ما هو كفر, كفر بذلك، وإن لم يقصد أن يكون كافرًا، إذ لا بقصد الكفر أحدّ إلًّا ما شاء الله.
“Whoever says or does that which is kufr, then he becomes a kafir by that itself, even if he did not intend to become a disbeliever, for no one intends kufr except whom Allah wills.”
